The Facts on Plastic

  • Americans throw out 30 million tons of plastic every year
  • 33% of plastic is used once before becoming trash
  • Nearly every piece of plastic ever made still exists today
  • More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped in our oceans every year
  • There are 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of ocean
  • One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans
  • Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century
  • We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use
  • Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as incinerating it

How can YOU help? Take the #MyPlasticChallenge!

To create awareness and to make a difference, Benjamin Von Wong and The New Creatives team challenged you to create something out of a plastic water bottle and photograph it outside.

Here are some of our favorite submissions from the #MyPlasticChallenge:

If you think plastic garbage is really a problem, and you want a real solution, prove it. Make a piece of plastic TRASH into something. Anything. Take a selfie-style picture of your Plastic Art. Post that picture with the hashtag and a CHALLENGE for three other people to do the same. This isn’t about getting a bunch of people to do a bunch of random stuff. It’s about evidence that people care. That you care. When enough people start talking about a problem, laws change, businesses change, and people change. The problem gets solved.

  2. Snap a photo outside
  3. Hashtag it with #MyPlasticChallenge and challenge 3 friends
